"The best place to be is by the Sea"
Where are your favourite beaches?
There is nothing more perfect than a quiet rocky cove, simply perfect and everything I need for an inspiring day. I do, however have so many favourite beaches, too many to list! Different beaches lend themselves to being favourites for different activities. Drawing, beachcombing, rock pooling, walking, photography, crabbing, sitting or simply just having fun!
What is the most interesting item you have found whilst beach combing?
I am intrigued and interested by most things washed up on the foreshore. Each piece has a story to tell, whether it be a rusty old tin, a childs shoe or a peak to a cap. where did it start, where has it travelled and why is it here?
What inspires your designs?
My work is based entirely on the coast and its subsequent activities.
Living by the sea gives endless inspiration both visually and atmospherically,
patterns, shapes, contours, objects and textures provide an endless supply of
material to work with. I have a particular fondness for objects washed up on
the shore together with fishing boats.
What is your favourite coastal activity to do in the Spring?
I am most happy strolling the beaches in every season and any weather, although dry conditions are preferred! Under the guise of a family walk, I cannot resist having a quick beachcomb along the way, my children (and nearly my husband!)have now embraced my addiction and too are well trained in finding treasures from the sea!
What is your favourite childhood memory of visiting the seaside?
My fondest memories of childhood are always of family holidays and weekend getaways, which were always spent along the coastlines of Dorset, Cornwall and the Isle of Wight. Escaping from London at every opportunity to the captivating draw of the sea. My Dad would dive wrecks and without fail would bring back sea treasures that would fill me with excitement and joy and quite likely led to my utter obsession with searching for unusual objects washed up by the sea!
If you could live anywhere on the coast where would it be?
Having recently achieved our family ambition to move to the coast, just over two years ago, I could not be more happier. We have taken to our new lifestyle by the sea like gulls to water and adore our beautiful Hampshire and Dorset coast.
